ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION

Elliptical
construction digunakan untuk menggabungkan dua kalimat yang mempunyai subyek
yang berbeda tetapi kedua subyek tersebut melakukan kegiatan yang sama. Hal ini
dilakukan agar tidak terjadi pengulangan kalimat.
Contoh
(dalam bahasa Indonesia) :
-
Saya pergi ke sekolah naik sepeda
-
Kamu pergi ke sekolah naik sepeda
Jika digabungkan menjadi :
-
Saya pergi ke sekolah naik sepeda dan kamu juga/juga kamu
Dalam bahasa
Inggris untuk menggabungkan dengan cara tersebut menggunakan kata too atau so jika kedua kalimat yang digabungkan adalah kalimat positif. Jika
kalimat yang digabungkan adalah kalimat negatif maka menggunakan kata either atau neither.
Contoh pada
kalimat positif :

– We study English every Friday
– She studies English ecery Friday
= We study English every Friday and she does too
= We study English every Friday and so does she
2.
– They borrowed
novels at the library
– I borrowed
novels at the library
= They borrowed novels at the library and I did too
= They borrowed novels at the library and so did I
3.
– I am a footballer
– He is a footballer
= I am a footballer and He is too
= I am a footballer and so is He
Contoh pada
kalimat negatif :
1.
– You do not go to school by bike
– The boy does not go to school by bike
= You do not go to school by bike and the boy does
not either
= You do not go to school by bike and neither does the boy
2.
– You aren’t very busy
– The girl isn’t very busy
= You aren’t very busy and the girl isn’t either
= You aren’t very busy and neither is the girl

kedua kalimat berikut dengan menggunakan too
dan so atau either dan neither !
